"Purity of heart meant a cultivating a heart that was centered on only one thing - Jesus and his call on one's life. Asceticism cultivated purity of heart by removing distractions; psalmody and prayer by fixing the mind on Jesus, manual labor by earning one's way and being able to do good for others. But each of these could become an end in itself, and so miss being purity of heart."
