Today, 13 June, is the feast of the Franciscan saint, Anthony of Padua, and as this statue in a church in Trastevere shows, he is a very popular saint!
Born in Lisbon in 1195, Anthony joined the Augustinian canons, but then later joined the new order started by St Francis of Assisi and became a friar. He was a preacher of great note, became the order's first theologian and doctor of the Church and became Minister General of the order. He died in 1231 and was canonized in 1263
